Yorkshire in 1841

This map is based on an analysis of Kays in the 1841 census for Yorkshire. It is loosely based on the old wapentakes, but with some variations – see footnote1 for more on this. For more information on what’s being displayed, see What's shown.

It’s clear that the majority of Kays lived in the West Riding (Agbrigg alone counts for 46% of the Yorkshire Kays), but so did a lot of people – 73% of the population lived in the West Riding in 1841. On these maps we can only suggest that you, the reader, draw your own conclusions. Do please use the radio buttons to investigate the differences when looking at the distribution based on area or population.

Before 1832, Yorkshire had 609 parishes, some of them tiny, which is why we’ve gone for wapentakes to make the results easier to view. But the wapentakes as shown here will not necessarily match what you may find on sites such as Genuki. This is partly driven by what the census used – for example, Kingston upon Hull in the census includes the parishes of North Ferriby, Kirk Ella and Hessle, which is not what you will see on many maps, while the parish of Grinton is placed in Gilling West rather than Hang West. We’re also not showing detached parts of wappentakes – we’re interested in geographical rather than administrative location, so those detached parts are merged into the surrounding wapentake. This is particularly the case with Strafforth and Tickhill, where the split between the Upper and Lower Divisions is totally arbitrary.
