The Kay Family Association UK

2017 Gathering

This year’s gathering will be held on Saturday 30th September at the Holiday Inn Express in Burnley, between 2pm and 5pm, followed by dinner in the evening. This year is the 50th anniversary of the death of Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth, and we are making her the focus of our gathering. She had a life-long interest in lace-making and embroidery, and her collection of over 30,000 pieces is housed at Gawthorpe Hall, until recently the home of the Kay-Shuttleworths.

There will be a talk in the afternoon by Rachel Midgley, curator of the collection; she will tell us about Rachel’s life and collection, and about the special exhibition that is being mounted to mark the anniversary. It is also hoped that we will be able to hear excerpts from interviews that Rachel gave shortly before her death.

On Sunday, we will be visiting Gawthorpe Hall; we have organised a guided tour which will last about an hour and a half and will include the house itself, as well as the collection and exhibition. This is a golden opportunity for an in-depth insight into the house and the collection, and is not to be missed. The cost of this will be £7 a head, payable on the day. We will meet outside the house at 10:30; please let us know if you plan to attend.

The Holiday Inn Express is at 55 Pendle Way, Burnley, BB12 0TJ. A number of rooms have been reserved for us on the Friday and Saturday nights, at a rate of £59 per night, inclusive of breakfast. Quote the Association when making your booking (tel: 01282 855 955).

We hope that as many members as possible will be able to join us for what promises to be a memorable occasion. Do please let us know if you are able to come, and if you can join the visit on Sunday, so much the better (
