Notes on Dates

Before 1752, the old-style Julian calendar was in use, when the new year began on 25^th March. The new-style Gregorian calendar was introduced on 3^rd September 1752, which therefore became 14^th September. Years given here reflect that, though no attempt has been made to adjust the day and month. A date such as 6^th March 1712 (old style) is given as 6^th March 1712/3 (i.e. 1712 old style, 1713 new style).
