Bury in 1841

The map of 17th and 18th century Lancashire showed clearly the concentration of Kays in Bury. This was still the case in 1841, though not so pronounced. The map on this page gives a breakdown of the census returns for Bury by township.

The census shows clearly how the population had shifted with the growth of industry in the south of the parish, across the townships of Tottington Lower End, Elton, Bury and Heap. The map shows that the Kays followed this pattern, but it is instructive to use the radio buttons and see what happens when the Kays are viewed relative to the general population. We see then that like for like, they were more evenly spread.

Note
The boundaries of the townships are derived from a copy of the Ordnance Survey (1845-1848) at the Lancashire Archives which had been marked up with the townships. Unlike the boundaries shown in our map of Bury before 1700, some land to the west of the River Irwell has been included in the township of Walmersley rather than Elton.
