The Heartlands

On this page, we home in on the most populated parts of the counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire, and take it down to parish level. To the left are those parts of Lancashire where the most Kays were found in 1841, those parishes in the south east of the county. The two counties are slightly separated for clarity. The parish of Rochdale had parts in both counties; they are shown here as separate entities.

As ever, we leave conclusions to the reader, but the concentration of Kays in the parishes of Kirkheaton, Kirkburton, Emley and Almondbury has to be remarked on, particularly when viewing Kays relative to the total population – the density is higher than anything to be found in Lancashire.
