# Yorkshire in 1841

This map is based on an analysis of Kays in the 1841 census for Yorkshire. It is loosely based on the old wapentakes, but with some variations – see footnote^{1} for more on this. For more information on what’s being displayed, see What's shown.

It’s clear that the majority of Kays lived in the West Riding (Agbrigg alone counts for 46% of the Yorkshire Kays), but so did a lot of people – 73% of the population lived in the West Riding in 1841. On these maps we can only suggest that you, the reader, draw your own conclusions. Do please use the radio buttons to investigate the differences when looking at the distribution based on area or population.

See Yorkshire Names in 1841 for the names we found and where we found them. To compare the south west of the county with what was happening on the other side of the Pennines, have a look at our page The Heartlands.
