Cheshire in 1841

This map is based on an analysis of Kays in the 1841 census for Cheshire. Because of the numbers involved, we haven’t taken the level of detail below the traditional hundreds, but the parish level analysis later gives an idea of where the Kays were to be found – in the north of the hundred of Macclesfield, just across the border from Lancashire. For more information on what’s being displayed, see What's shown.

The Different Spellings

Cheshire had a much wider range of spellings of the name Kay than the other counties to the south of Lancashire and Yorkshire. It has to be assumed that this was caused by its proximity to Manchester and Liverpool where we have seen the same mix (see Lancashire in 1841). You can see this range in the map whose link follows. The preponderence of ‘Kay’ in Macclesfield and ‘Key’ elsewhere is worthy of note, we think – possibly a further example of that band of Keys we’ve identified in The Different Spellings across the country to the south of Yorkshire and Lancashire.

On this map, we’re showing the distribution of the spellings as it relates to the number of Kays in a hundred rather than the total population. Select the spelling that interests you. and hover over a hundred to see the percentage; for example, select Kay and hover over Macclesfield to see that 87.8% of Kays in Macclesfield used that spelling.
