Durham in 1841

This map is based on our extracts from the 1841 census. The scale of the map and the number of Kays in the county meant that any attempt to go lower than the four wards of Durham on our map of Kays in the North would not have been viable. On this map, we using the same sub-divisions of those wards as the census1. For more information on what’s being displayed, see What's shown.

The Different Spellings

Durham predominantly used the Kay spelling, with the exception of the Cay variant in the north east of the county. You can see this in the map whose link follows.

We’re working here on what the census gave as wards and parishes. This does not always match what we’ve found on lists and maps of Durham, so we’ve had to be flexible. In particular, Chester (Middle Division) only includes the parish of Chester le Street and part of Durham St Oswald. All we’ve shown here is Chester le Street. What the census describes as Sunderland has been included in Chester (East). Also, although the exclaves of Islandshire and Norhamshire were included in Durham for the 1841 census, they are geographically in Northumberland, so are not shown on the map.
